Preschool Classroom Readiness Expectations

 

Age-appropriate expectations for preschool-aged students upon entrance to Christ the King School:

 

3 - 3.5 Years:

• Can consistently manage toilet needs independently

• Can use crayons, markers, and manipulate small play materials

• Plays imaginatively with dolls, blocks, and other toys

• Enjoys outdoor play, climbing, and sliding

• Shows interest in books with simple plots

• Listens attentively; can follow 1-step directions

• Articulates basic needs

• Contributes appropriate remarks/responses to questions

• Demonstrates a growing ability to manage strong emotions and respond appropriately to challenging situations 

 

3.5 - 4 Years:

• Consistently manages toilet needs independently

• May dress and undress with little help

• Draws, colors, and paints with more detail

• Shows imagination and inventiveness

• Plays imaginatively with dolls, blocks, and other toys

• Is discovering the value of friendship through play

• Beginning to show interest in letters and numbers

• Shows interest in books with stories and illustrations

• Listens attentively; can follow 1 and 2-step directions

• Articulates basic needs

• Contributes appropriate remarks/responses to questions

• Demonstrates a growing ability to manage strong emotions and respond appropriately to challenging situations 

 

4 - 4.5 Years:

• Consistently manages toilet needs independently

• Beginning to use correct pencil grasp

• Has well-developed gross motor skills

• Plays imaginatively with dolls, blocks, and other toys

• Interested in simple games

• Shows an interest in letters and numbers

• Follows the plot of books with stories and illustrations

• Enjoys group activities involving singing and movement

• Beginning to play cooperatively

• Listens attentively; can follow 1 and 2-step directions

• Articulates needs and wants

• Contributes appropriate remarks/responses to questions

• Demonstrates a growing ability to manage strong emotions and respond appropriately to challenging situations 

 

5+ Years:

• Consistently manages toilet needs independently

• Has increased control over pencil grasp

• Has well-developed gross motor skills

• Builds more complicated block structures

• Plays imaginatively with dolls, blocks, and other toys

• Comprehends stories and children’s literature

• Shows interest in letters and numbers

• Beginning to recognize his/her name

• Asks questions frequently and listens attentively to the answers

• Stays on task longer with activities of interest

• Can accurately judge what he/she can and cannot do

• Listens attentively; can follow mutli-step directions

• Clearly articulates needs and wants

• Contributes appropriate remarks/responses to questions

• Consistently manages strong emotions and responds appropriately to challenging situations
